As the way we work continues to change, the work life of parents changes with it. There is a dramatically shifting landscape amongst working parents, as they continue to work more flexible hours in order to accommodate the ever-changing requirements of childcare.
The significant cost of childcare is a huge consideration for many parents as they head back to work after maternity/paternity leave. However, freelancers, remote workers and entrepreneurs don’t have to spend hundreds and thousands on yearly childcare fees, with the introduction of coworking spaces that are catering to their parenting needs. Some coworking spaces are now starting to offer childcare facilities on-site, allowing parents to freely work while also ensuring their children are being cared for.
Statistics are continuously supporting this ever-growing need. Over 3.9 million Americans now work from home at least half of the week, according to FlexJobs’ most recent State of the Remote Job Marketplace report. It has also recently been revealed that in England, the number of women who have dependent children and go out to work has increased by over a million in two decades. ONS figures show that 4.9 million mothers in England with dependent children are in work in 2017, up from 3.7 million in 1996. These figures illustrate the need for more workplace flexibility and better support for families in this day and age, many of whom are in poverty despite parents working.
Mothers with very young children still have the lowest employment levels of all parents with dependent children, at 65%, far behind the 93% of fathers with children of the same age. The introduction of this flexible childcare option can also help many women avoid the “motherhood penalty,” where women with children earn less than those without kids. Another one of the many benefits we will see with the provision of childcare on-site at coworking spaces.
Despite the evident need to provide childcare on-site, only a limited number of spaces are offering this service. Always at the forefront of emerging trends, our Areaworks coworking spaces will be offering childcare in our upcoming buildings.
